A major twist has emerged in the leadership crisis rocking the National Union of Road Transport Workers, as the faction led by Tajudeen Baruwa has taken control of the union’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The takeover occurred on Monday when members loyal to Baruwa stormed the headquarters, asserting control amid a prolonged leadership dispute with the rival faction headed by Ayinde Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo.
The crisis dates back to November 2024, when MC Oluomo was elected the union’s National President. However, the situation took a legal turn after a court ruling later recognized Baruwa as the legitimate leader in the dispute over the union’s national leadership.
Despite the court’s decision, MC Oluomo continued to operate as president, maintaining influence within the union until the latest development, which has now shifted control of the national secretariat to Baruwa’s camp.
The takeover signals a significant escalation in the power struggle within one of Nigeria’s most influential transport unions, raising concerns about potential unrest and operational disruptions across the country’s road transport system.
As the situation unfolds, attention is expected to turn to how authorities and stakeholders will respond to the competing claims to leadership, and whether the crisis can be resolved without further conflict.
