Meta rolls out AI tools to automate support and content moderation

Meta to Acquire AI Startup Manus in $2bn–$3bn Deal

Meta is expanding the role of artificial intelligence across Facebook and Instagram, introducing new systems designed to handle two of its most critical functions: user support and content moderation.

At the centre of the rollout is a Meta AI support assistant that provides round-the-clock help for account-related issues.

The tool can guide users through password recovery, security checks and profile settings, reducing the need for manual intervention and marking a shift toward always-on, automated customer service.

The assistant is being deployed across regions where Meta AI is already available, including within mobile apps and desktop help centres. For a platform operating at global scale, the move could significantly reduce response times while lowering the cost of handling millions of support requests.

At the same time, Meta is strengthening its use of AI in content enforcement. The company is deploying systems designed to detect and remove harmful content, including scams and other serious violations, earlier and more accurately.

AI becomes the first line of platform enforcement

The broader shift is structural. AI is increasingly becoming the first layer of interaction and enforcement across Meta’s platforms, handling high-volume, repetitive tasks that were previously dependent on human teams.

According to the company, early results show improved detection rates and fewer errors in identifying problematic content compared to traditional moderation approaches. The systems are also designed to reduce over-enforcement, a long-standing challenge where legitimate content is mistakenly removed.

Human reviewers will remain part of the process, but their role is evolving. Instead of handling large volumes of routine cases, they are expected to focus on more complex, sensitive or ambiguous decisions that require judgment beyond what automated systems can provide.

This hybrid model is quickly becoming standard across the industry, as platforms try to balance efficiency with accountability. The pressure is growing as online threats become more sophisticated, often using the same AI technologies to generate scams, deepfakes and misleading content at scale.

For Meta, the expansion is part of a longer-term strategy to embed AI across its entire ecosystem. Beyond safety and support, the company is positioning AI as a core layer that shapes how users interact with its apps and how the platform governs itself.

The implications extend beyond user experience. Faster support, stronger enforcement and improved platform integrity can drive higher engagement, a key factor for a business that depends heavily on advertising revenue.

But the shift also raises new questions. As AI takes on a larger role in decision-making, concerns around accuracy, bias, transparency and data privacy are likely to intensify.

For now, Meta is betting that automation, backed by human oversight, is the only way to manage platforms at its scale. The direction is clear: AI is no longer a supporting tool, it is becoming the system that runs the platform.
