Businesswoman Aisha Achimugu has pushed back against growing speculation surrounding her fortune, firmly denying claims that her wealth is tied to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Amid mounting public scrutiny and her legal standoff with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Achimugu used a television interview to tell her side of the story, insisting her success was built long before the political associations now drawing attention.
Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, the founder of Oceangate Engineering Oil and Gas Ltd made it clear she was not willing to let public speculation define the source of her wealth.
When asked directly whether her fortune was linked to Sanwo Olu or powerful associates, her response was blunt.
“Not at all.”
That emphatic denial has quickly become the focal point of a conversation that has followed the entrepreneur for months.
According to Achimugu, her business journey did not begin in elite political circles but in entrepreneurship dating back to 2001. She said she built her career through years of work in the oil and gas sector and pointed to her background and professional history as evidence.
She also referenced her late husband, whom she said served as Managing Director of PPMCC, while noting she met him in the course of doing business in the NNPC ecosystem.
For Achimugu, the message was clear; her wealth predates the controversy.
Her remarks come against the backdrop of heightened attention that intensified after her lavish seven-day 50th birthday celebration in Grenada in January 2024.
That event, filled with luxury imagery and attended by several high-profile figures from politics and entertainment, catapulted her into a different level of public fascination.
But it also triggered questions.
Governor Sanwo Olu’s presence at the celebration fueled speculation online, with critics questioning whether political relationships played a role in her financial rise.
Now, Achimugu appears determined to separate perception from reality.
Her comments also arrive as she faces even deeper scrutiny following her legal issues with the EFCC.
In April 2025, the anti-graft agency declared her wanted for money-laundering allegations, a development that dramatically heightened public interest in her finances.
She was later arrested at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on April 29, 2025, adding another layer of controversy to a name already dominating headlines.
That is why her latest interview carries weight.
It is not simply a denial of rumours.
It is a direct attempt to reclaim the narrative around her success at a moment when questions about her wealth have become inseparable from broader legal and political scrutiny.
For some, her comments may reinforce the image of a self-made entrepreneur defending her legacy.
For others, they may do little to quiet ongoing questions as investigations continue.
Either way, the interview has added a new chapter to a story that has increasingly blurred the lines between business success, public spectacle and political speculation.
And with one firm “Not at all,” Aisha Achimugu has made it clear she is rejecting the suggestion that her fortune was built through political patronage.
