Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola has issued a public apology to the Yoruba community following backlash over a controversial scene in one of her films.
The outrage stemmed from a viral clip featuring IK Ogbonna, whose remarks during a comedic exchange were widely perceived as offensive, sparking criticism and threats directed at Ogunmola. The situation reportedly became so intense that the actress briefly stepped away from social media.
Addressing the controversy, Ogunmola expressed deep regret for the scene’s impact, acknowledging that the reactions over the past few days had been overwhelming.
She clarified that the film was shot about three years ago and was intended as a lighthearted story built around tribal misunderstandings that eventually resolve through love and unity.
According to her, there was no intention to insult or stereotype any ethnic group.
Reaffirming her identity, she emphasised her Yoruba roots and pride in her heritage.
“I am Yoruba, omo Ibadan ponbele ni mi. I take full responsibility and sincerely apologise to my people and lovers of my work,” she said.
She also revealed that the backlash included threats to her life and livelihood, describing the experience as deeply disturbing.
“First of all, I want to apologise to the well respected Yoruba people for this error. The insult and threat to life and livelihood I have experienced in the last three days has been extremely disturbing,” she added.
Ogunmola concluded by apologising to her supporters and the wider Yoruba community, taking full responsibility for the unintended fallout from the scene.
