Governor Dapo Abiodun has rolled out new palliative measures for public servants, introducing a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance alongside a weekly day off duty to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices and the high cost of living.
The initiative, which will run for three months starting in April 2026, aims to reduce the financial strain on workers, particularly the burden of daily transportation following the recent increase in fuel pump prices.
In a statement released by the Ogun State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, the government confirmed that eligible workers will now enjoy one day off per week, in addition to transport support.
According to Onasanya, the move is designed not only to ease commuting challenges but also to boost morale and improve productivity among workers.
However, the government clarified that some categories of workers will not participate in the weekly day off arrangement due to the essential nature of their duties.
These include medical personnel, judicial staff, teaching and non-teaching staff, security operatives, Accounting Officers, Heads of Departments, and other critical service providers.
Despite this exemption, all affected workers will still receive the ₦10,000 transport allowance.
The statement further explained that Accounting Officers across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies will determine suitable days off for eligible workers without disrupting service delivery.
Describing the intervention as timely, Onasanya commended Governor Abiodun for prioritising workers’ welfare during a period of economic pressure, as many Nigerians continue to grapple with rising living costs.
