The All Progressives Congress (APC) has settled on a governorship candidate for Ogun State ahead of the 2027 election — and it is Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.
The announcement was made at a party caucus meeting held at the APC secretariat in Abeokuta, where Governor Dapo Abiodun formally presented Yayi as the consensus candidate. The decision, months in the making, is rooted in a deliberate push to finally give Ogun West its first governor since the state’s creation.
“The reason Ogun West has not been able to produce a governor until now is due to a lack of cooperation,” Governor Abiodun said at the event.
The process, according to Abiodun, involved extensive consultations — including direct conversations with President Bola Tinubu and APC elder statesman, former Governor Olusegun Osoba.
“The discussions did not just start recently. They began about six months ago,” he revealed, adding that President Tinubu himself asked which zone he preferred for the next governor.
“The President asked me which zone I preferred for the next governor, and I said Ogun West because it has not produced a governor,” Abiodun said.
Other major aspirants, including Biodun Akinlade and Gboyega Isiaka, were said to have stepped aside and pledged their support for Yayi’s candidacy — a show of unity the party hopes will translate into electoral strength come 2027.
Yayi, who currently represents Ogun West in the National Assembly, accepted the endorsement, pledging loyalty to both the party and the people of Ogun State.
“With the support and cooperation of all, I will not let the party and the state down,” he said in his acceptance speech.
The unveiling marks a significant step in APC’s preparations for the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State, with the party banking on a united front to retain the state.
