The U.S is Now Actively Denying Visas to Nigerians Accused of Religious Persecution and the Policy Has Real Teeth

U.S. Introduces $250 Visa Integrity Fee for Tourists, Students, and Workers

Washington has moved from policy announcement to active enforcement, and certain Nigerians are already feeling the consequences.

The United States has confirmed it is enforcing visa restrictions against individuals in Nigeria accused of involvement in religious persecution, with Mark Walker stating on Friday that the measures are no longer just a declaration but are actively being implemented.

“We have already executed on this policy, and we will continue to subject perpetrators to additional scrutiny. If you engage in persecution, you are not welcome in America,” Walker said in a statement.

“The United States is safer when we keep those responsible for religious persecution from entering our homeland.”

The framework behind the restrictions was introduced in December 2025 by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, giving the US State Department authority to deny visas to anyone connected directly or indirectly to violations of religious freedom.

That includes individuals who plan, support, finance or carry out acts of persecution. In some cases, immediate family members of those implicated may also be affected.

Rubio framed the policy as a direct response to what he described as ongoing atrocities and violence against Christians in Nigeria, pointing specifically to attacks linked to extremist factions and armed groups operating in the northern and Middle Belt regions of the country.

The shift from announcement to enforcement is a significant development here. Visa restriction policies are often announced in strong language but lack consistent follow-through.

Walker’s statement that the policy has already been executed signals that the State Department is treating this as an active tool rather than a diplomatic signal.

For Nigerians with US visa interests who have any documented connection to religious violence or the groups linked to it, the message from Washington is clear and the consequences are already in motion.
