Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu Officially Takes Over as Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu has officially assumed office as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, stepping into one of the country’s most strategic cabinet positions following her elevation by Bola Tinubu.

Her appointment marks a significant transition in Nigeria’s diplomatic leadership, following the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down in March to pursue his governorship ambitions in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, Odumegwu Ojukwu was formally received at the ministry headquarters by senior officials led by Permanent Secretary Dunoma Ahmed, alongside heads of agencies operating under the foreign affairs structure.

The gathering reflected the institutional weight of the transition.

Representatives from several key diplomatic and policy agencies were present, including the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, the Technical Aid Corps, and the Foreign Service Academy.

Welcoming the new minister, Ahmed described her elevation as recognition of her professionalism and commitment to public service, expressing confidence in her ability to strengthen Nigeria’s global engagement.

He also reiterated the ministry’s readiness to support her in advancing the administration’s foreign policy priorities, including protecting Nigerians abroad, improving diplomatic partnerships, attracting foreign investment, and promoting regional stability.

Goodwill messages were delivered by various agency heads and Nigeria’s representative to the Economic Community of West African States, Olawale Emmanuel Awe, signaling institutional support for the new leadership.

In her response, Odumegwu Ojukwu thanked the ministry’s staff for the warm reception and pledged to continue strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic direction under the current administration.

She emphasized the importance of professionalism, efficiency, innovation, and unity within the foreign service, particularly at a time when global geopolitical and economic challenges continue to evolve rapidly.

Her elevation also carries symbolic significance.

As a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, she steps into the top role with prior experience in the ministry’s operations and international engagements, positioning her as a familiar figure within Nigeria’s diplomatic architecture.

Observers will now closely watch how her leadership shapes Nigeria’s foreign policy, especially in regional security, diaspora relations, economic diplomacy, and continental cooperation.

With growing global competition for investment and influence, the role of Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry has become increasingly central to the country’s broader political and economic strategy.

For Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, Friday’s swearing-in represents more than a promotion; it marks the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria’s diplomatic leadership at a time of heightened international attention and regional responsibility.
