The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Justice Chidiebere, a detained social commentator popularly known online as “Justice Crack,” following his ongoing legal battle with the Federal Government over alleged cybercrime-related offences.
Justice Crack, who has gained attention on social media for his outspoken commentary, is currently being prosecuted by the Department of State Services over a viral video linked to remarks concerning the Nigerian Army.
The Federal Government officially opened its case against him before the court on Monday.
Delivering the ruling, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the defendant bail for ₦5 million with one surety in like amount.
The ruling comes after earlier proceedings surrounding his bail application were delayed due to disputes over legal representation in the courtroom.
Last Thursday, court proceedings were reportedly stalled after two separate lawyers appeared and both claimed to have been engaged to represent Justice Crack in the matter.
The disagreement created confusion before the court eventually adjourned proceedings.
The case has continued to attract attention online due to debates over freedom of expression, online commentary, and cybercrime enforcement in Nigeria.
Justice Crack became widely known on social media through controversial, often blunt commentary videos on political and national issues.
The DSS, however, alleges that the viral content linked to the case violated provisions on cybercrime offenses.
With bail now granted, attention is expected to shift toward the main trial proceedings and the legal arguments surrounding the controversial video at the center of the case.
