Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has addressed the backlash that followed her revelation that she burned the outfit she wore to the burial of late actor Alex Ekubo, insisting that her comments were misunderstood.
The actress had earlier disclosed on Instagram that she disposed of the outfit after receiving advice from an elder she deeply respects.
The revelation sparked mixed reactions online, with some people supporting the practice as a cultural or personal belief, while others questioned her decision to publicly discuss it.
Responding to the criticism, Angela clarified that her message was not intended to create controversy and was directed at specific individuals who understood the context behind her statement.
According to her, many social media users had misinterpreted her intentions.
“Oh well, my those who know, know. My message out here is not to stir up whatever, because I know you idiots will interpret it wrongly. But it is To Whom It May Concern. Anyways, suit yourselves,” she wrote.
The actress also corrected claims that she took the outfit back to Lagos to burn it, explaining that she handed it over to her aunt in Owerri to dispose of on her behalf.
“I gave the outfit I wore to the burial to my aunt in Owerri to burn it for me. I didn’t even go to Lagos with it.
“And this information is To Whom It May Concern. Some of you talking trash, you had better shut your mouth and understand that the family and loved ones are still grieving. Be careful what you say out there,” she added.
Angela further urged critics to show sensitivity, reminding the public that the late actor’s family, friends, and colleagues are still mourning his loss.
The actress had initially explained that her decision was based on advice from her godmother, who told her that clothes worn to burials should not be kept but should instead be destroyed after the ceremony.
She said she shared the information simply for the benefit of family members and close associates who may have been interested in the tradition.
Alex Ekubo passed away on May 11 at the age of 40 following complications related to advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
The actor was laid to rest on June 18 in his hometown of Arochukwu, Abia State, after a series of funeral ceremonies attended by family members, friends, and several figures from Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
While Angela Okorie’s comments have continued to spark debate online, she maintains that her actions were based on personal beliefs and advice from trusted elders, rather than an attempt to attract public attention.
