Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has addressed growing speculation surrounding his fitness and future at the club, insisting his commitment to both Barcelona and the Netherlands has never wavered.
In a heartfelt message shared with fans, the Dutch international said he felt compelled to speak after what he described as false reports questioning his dedication to the Catalan giants.
“Normally, I don’t pay much attention to what is being written about me, the team or the club. But recently, there’s been a lot of speculation about my injury and my situation at Barça,” he wrote.
De Jong admitted it had been difficult to see his loyalty questioned, stressing that football has always been his greatest passion.
“It’s difficult for me to see people questioning my relationship and commitment to the club because of false reports. Football is everything to me, and I have always given everything I have for FC Barcelona and my country.”
The midfielder explained that he sustained a knee injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Following initial medical assessments, he was informed the injury was minor and that continuing to play would not make it worse, despite the discomfort.
According to De Jong, he decided to play through the pain because he wanted to continue helping both Barcelona and the Dutch national team whenever possible.
However, after returning to Barcelona during his holiday for further examinations, doctors discovered the injury was more serious than first believed.
Thankfully, he confirmed that surgery will not be required at this stage.
“These showed that the injury was more serious than initially determined. Thankfully, at this stage there is no need for surgery, and I am now fully focused on my recovery and returning to the pitch as soon as possible.”
The 29-year-old also emphasized that he takes his profession and physical condition very seriously, noting that injuries are sometimes unavoidable despite an athlete’s best efforts.
He ended his statement by reaffirming his love for Barcelona and the Netherlands, promising supporters that he remains fully committed to the club and will continue giving everything for the badge.
“Playing for Barça and Oranje is something I feel incredibly proud of, and my commitment to both will never change. I will continue to give everything for this badge, for my teammates and for our fans.”
Closing his message, De Jong thanked fans for their continued support and expressed his determination to return to action as quickly as possible.
“There are still many moments to create and goals we want to achieve together. Thank you for all your support. I can’t wait to be back.”
His statement comes amid widespread speculation over his fitness following the World Cup, with the midfielder now hoping to put the rumours to rest as he focuses on his recovery.
