Veteran Nollywood actress Rita Edochie has criticised a wedding MC over comments she described as unfair and discriminatory towards women, insisting that society must stop applying different standards to men and women in marriage.
Reacting to a video from a wedding ceremony, the actress expressed outrage at the MC’s message, saying she hoped it was merely a joke or social media content.
‘Enough of this gender inequality’
In a lengthy post shared on social media, Rita argued that if society often excuses men for infidelity because they are “polygamous by nature,” then women should be shown the same understanding, forgiveness and compassion.
She wrote:
“I AM VERY ANGRY THIS MORNING, AND I PRAY THIS IS JUST A JOKE AND CONTENT……
LOOK, IF MEN CAN BE EXCUSED BECAUSE THEY ARE ‘POLYGAMOUS BY NATURE,’ THEN WOMEN DESERVE THE SAME GRACE, THE SAME MERCY, AND THE SAME FORGIVENESS.
ENOUGH OF THIS GENDER INEQUALITY!!”
‘One rule for men, another for women’
The actress maintained that society has long judged men and women differently when it comes to infidelity.
According to her:
“FOR TOO LONG, SOCIETY HAS PREACHED ONE GOSPEL FOR MEN AND ANOTHER FOR WOMEN. WHEN A MAN IS UNFAITHFUL, MANY ARE QUICK TO CALL IT ‘HIS NATURE‘ OR A MOMENT OF WEAKNESS, BUT WHEN A WOMAN COMMITS THE SAME OFFENCE, SHE IS BRANDED, CONDEMNED, AND OFTEN TOLD SHE NO LONGER DESERVES HER HOME.”
She argued that if infidelity is considered a moral wrongdoing, the standard should apply equally to both men and women.
“IF INFIDELITY IS A SIN, THEN IT IS A SIN FOR BOTH. IF FORGIVENESS EXISTS, THEN IT SHOULD NOT BE RESERVED FOR ONE GENDER. JUSTICE THAT FAVOURS MEN WHILE CRUSHING WOMEN IS NOT JUSTICE, IT IS WITCHCRAFT.”
‘Marriage should be built on fairness’
Rita also criticised what she described as unrealistic expectations placed on women in marriages.
She stated:
“A MARRIAGE CANNOT BE BUILT ON A SYSTEM WHERE THE MAN IS EXPECTED TO BE UNDERSTOOD, WHILE THE WOMAN IS EXPECTED TO BE PERFECT. THAT IS NOT FAIRNESS; IT IS PARTIALITY.”
Calls for equal accountability
In conclusion, the actress insisted that the principles of marriage should apply equally regardless of gender.
“THE RULES OF MARRIAGE SHOULD NOT CHANGE BASED ON WHETHER THE OFFENDER IS WEARING TROUSERS OR A SKIRT. ACCOUNTABILITY MUST BE EQUAL. MERCY MUST BE EQUAL. DIGNITY MUST BE EQUAL.”
Her remarks have sparked conversations online, with many social media users debating the issue of gender expectations, accountability and forgiveness in marriage.
