Nollywood actress Sarah Martins has responded to the backlash that followed her recent comment about VeryDarkMan (VDM) after she showed off a brand-new iPhone 17 Pro Max she received as a gift.
The actress found herself at the centre of online criticism after posting a video celebrating the phone, with some social media users accusing her of taking an unnecessary swipe at the outspoken activist.
While expressing excitement over the gift from Mr. Anonymous, Sarah had compared the device to what she described as “VeryDarkMan’s kind of iPhone 17 Pro Max.”
The comment quickly sparked mixed reactions, with many interpreting it as a subtle jab at the social media personality.
However, Sarah has now dismissed those claims, insisting her statement was purely humorous and never intended to ridicule VDM.
Addressing the controversy in a follow-up post, the actress explained that she was simply referencing a joke VeryDarkMan had previously made about his own phone.
According to her, VDM had once humorously claimed that his device was an iPhone XR modified to resemble an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and her comment was made in that same playful context.
She wrote:
“I can NEVER disrespect VDM unprovoked… can’t you all take different humor from insult? Even my president personally said he’s iPhone 17 Pro Max is an XR coupled in 17 Pro Max, so was I wrong to say it’s not VDM kind of 17 Pro Max??? Nawa ooooo una body just dey pepper una.”
Sarah maintained that there as no hidden meaning behind her words and urged critics not to mistake humour for disrespect.
According to the actress, her remark was made in the same lighthearted spirit as VDM’s original joke and was never intended to mock or insult him.
Her clarification has since generated fresh reactions online, with some social media users accepting her explanation, while others continue to debate whether the comment was necessary.
The latest exchange adds to the long list of conversations involving VeryDarkMan, whose outspoken personality and online presence continue to make him one of Nigeria’s most talked-about social media figures.
