Vuyokazi Nciweni has finally addressed the video that’s kept Mzansi talking for over a week, and her explanation, while firm, hasn’t done much to quiet the speculation.
The Izingane ZeSthembu star found herself trending after footage surfaced showing her sharing a kiss with DJ and events promoter Thendo Zonzo, better known as DJ Zonzo, at a nightclub in Pretoria. The clip spread fast, and within hours, social media had already crowned them Mzansi’s newest couple, despite neither party confirming anything.
Vuyokazi’s account of the night is straightforward. She says she went out in Pretoria, met Zonzo there for the first time, and things unfolded from a place of pure spontaneity rather than any prior connection.
“If I knew I would have distanced myself from him. I met him at the club and we vibed. I was intoxicated. People who know me very well know that I would never post something like that.”
She’s been clear that she wasn’t the one who shared the footage online, suggesting instead that it likely came from Zonzo or someone in his circle that night. “People who know me know I would never do such a thing. I’m a private person. I am not dating Zonzo.”
Her frustration isn’t really about the kiss itself. It’s about the leap people made from one clip to an entire relationship narrative. “It just pisses me off that all of these things are said, he’s not even my boyfriend and I never said he’s my boyfriend,” she said, adding that if she ever did want to introduce a partner publicly, she’d do it deliberately and properly, not through a viral nightclub clip she didn’t consent to sharing.
The trouble for Vuyokazi is that the story hasn’t stayed contained to one video. A second clip later surfaced showing the pair getting cosy again at the same club, with Zonzo appearing to laugh while she danced, a detail that fuelled further scepticism rather than sympathy.
Then came a twist involving Zonzo’s alleged girlfriend, Hazel Kotu, who initially reacted to the kissing video online before appearing to reconcile with him days later, posting a bed selfie captioned “Nah, he needs to wake up and post me.” That single post reignited the entire conversation, with some online observers reading it as a pointed response to the Vuyokazi footage rather than an unrelated update.
The whiplash of events- a kiss, a denial, a second video, an apparent reconciliation between Zonzo and his girlfriend- has left plenty of people questioning the timeline Vuyokazi has presented.
Some fans online have openly wondered whether the entire episode was manufactured for attention, pointing out that she distanced herself from the narrative almost as soon as public reaction turned unfavourable.
Others have taken her explanation at face value, noting that a single night out being dissected this intensely says more about internet culture’s appetite for spectacle than about her actual conduct.
Vuyokazi, for her part, is standing firm on one point above all: she wants people to stop building a relationship narrative out of a moment she says she barely remembers.
“You guys are judging someone who was not even in her senses. I would never try to humiliate myself like that.” Whether the public accepts that framing or continues picking apart every follow-up clip is, at this point, largely out of her hands.
