Nationwide protest: Why last-minute meeting with FG failed – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has revealed the reason behind the unsuccessful last-minute meeting initiated by the Nigerian government to prevent the two-day nationwide protest from happening.

President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, expressed frustration at the congress being constantly ignored by the government.

According to him, “We are not doing rallies for the sake of moving around.”

Prior to this, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) had announced that they would not be participating in the planned protest.

The closed-door meeting, which included prominent government officials and representatives from the NLC and TUC, including the Attorney-General of the Federation, Ministers of Labour, Agriculture, Finance, Budget and Planning, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Head of Service, ended without any resolution.

Ajaero while briefing journalists on the outcome of the meeting, said, “We have concluded on that and the rally must go on.

“We are not doing rallies for the sake of moving around. We have demands which we must present at the National Assembly”.

Speaking on the security following warnings issued by the Department of State Service (DSS), Ajaero said, “It is the DSS’s constitutional responsibility to make sure that the rally is peaceful while we are going to try from our side to make sure it is peaceful.”
