Messi-less Argentina send Peru packing after 2-0 win

Argentina’s top player of the Copa America, Lautaro Martínez, scored twice in the second half of their match versus Peru.

With the help of the Inter Milan player’s double in the second half of Saturday’s match, Argentina easily defeated their opponents 2-0.

Argentina’s victory eliminated Peru from the tournament and guaranteed Argentina’s top spot in Group A.

In the 47th and 86th minutes of the competition, Martínez scored his first goal.

In the 47th minute, he coolly chipped the ball over Peru’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese following a flowing move.

He repeated this feat in the 86th minute after a defensive error from Peru.

Argentina, already qualified for the quarter-finals with wins over Canada and Chile, rested key players including captain Lionel Messi, who is recovering from a thigh injury.

Messi is expected to return for the quarterfinal match on Thursday in Houston.

Despite the absence of their coach Lionel Scaloni, who was suspended, Argentina dominated possession and had multiple attempts on target.
