My father was first Northern gov to attempt granting local govt autonomy – El-Rufai's son

Bello El-Rufai, House of Representatives member representing Kaduna North, praised former Governor Nasir El-Rufai as the first Northern Nigeria governor to attempt granting local governments full autonomy.

Bello believes history will eventually support his efforts.

Posting on X, he said: “Mal. @elrufai was the first Governor in Northern Nigeria to attempt granting local government full autonomy.

“History will vindicate Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.”

This statement follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that prevents the Federal Government from disbursing local government allocations through state governments.

In a significant verdict, Justice Emmanuel Agim stated that it is unconstitutional for state governments to retain local government funds.

The ruling was made in response to a local government autonomy lawsuit filed by the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, on behalf of the Nigerian Government.

Justice Agim’s directive ensures that local government allocations are no longer deposited into state government accounts and governors are prohibited from intercepting or withholding these funds.
