August 1: Deal strongly with anyone causing trouble – IGP directs officers

Inspector General of police, IGP Egbetokun

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed his officers to take strong action against arsonists and troublemakers participating in the EndBadGovernance protest starting today, August 1.

Egbetokun has cautioned that the police will detain anyone caught committing crimes during the nationwide protest. The police chief conveyed this warning in a statement he personally issued yesterday.

Furthermore, he criticized the protest organizers for neglecting to provide the police with essential information about the demonstrations, such as the names of potential participants and rally routes.

Egbetokun stated that intelligence reports indicate that the protests are intended to incite chaos.

According to Egbetokun: “The name given to the movement — ‘Take It Back Movement’ has far-reaching undemocratic, unconstitutional and illegal connotations.

“All officers and men of the Nigeria Police are hereby directed to act and deal decisively with any act of arson, intimidation or harassment of any citizen, threat to lives and properties, breach of peace and any act of criminality that may arise or flow from the planned protest in any part of the country.

“Perpetrators of any crime will be arrested and promptly prosecuted.”
