Miss Universe Nigeria winner Chidimma Adetshina has opened up about her path to winning the Miss Universe contest.
On Sunday, Creebhills reported that the black beauty queen who represented Taraba State in the Miss Universe competition triumphed over 25 other contestants. At the grand finale, which took place at Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos, the model was named Miss Universe Nigeria.
Following her win, Chidimma will represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe event in Mexico.
Speaking on her victory, Chidimma stated that it was not only for her but for everyone, and it was a true cry for unity.
In an interview with BBC News Pidgin, Chidimma described her difficult journey and how she was forced to withdraw from the Miss South Africa competition due to her citizenship. She stated that it has been a hectic one for her and that she has avoided discussing it since it makes me so sad. She admitted that she had sobbed earlier because she believed she needed to get used to talking about it.
Chidimma claimed that the incident was not small, but she will be fine. She expressed sadness that South Africans believed she was not South African enough because of her name, despite having lived in the nation for 23 years. She was heartbroken that she was not welcomed or embraced.
“It has been a hectic one, I think I’ve been avoiding it because it’s so emotional for me. I just cried earlier because I think I need to get used to talking about it.
It’s not a nice feeling at all and I think I’ve been avoiding it a lot, but it’s now starting to cloud and affect me, and I will have to deal with it and not suppress it.
What happened wasn’t a minor thing; it was a really major thing, but I will be okay.
South Africans felt I wasn’t South African enough because of my name. I lived there for 23 years. It’s heartbreaking to see I wasn’t welcome and accepted”.
