DDG, the performer of ‘I’m Geekin,’ undoubtedly had fans wondering if he was living up to the title of his 2023 hit track when he appeared on the newest installment of the ‘No Ordinary Podcast’ to deliver a divisive view on those with 9-to-5 jobs.
In a video that has gone viral since its release on September 20 (see above), the YouTuber-turned-rapper ruffled feathers with his take on the pursuit of business.
“A 9-to-5 should only be used to fund your own [business]. I don’t think nobody should ever get a job and say, ‘I’m gon be the 10 year best employee of the year. Nobody should ever think that,” the 26-year-old said before sharing, “I tell people all the time, you can’t be stuck in no 9-to-5. It’s nothing wrong with a 9-to-5, but it’s like what you doing with the 9-to-5. You shouldn’t be working a 9-to-5 to take care of your [life] for the rest of your life,”
Beyond igniting a heated debate on social media, his statement elicited criticism from many who thought it offensive, while others found it misinformed.
DDG (born Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.) attempted to clarify his contentious point of view in the comments area of The Shade Room.
“ima former TJ Maxx & Kroger employee & i used my checks to invest in myself. it’s just my opinion off experience. ain’t nun wrong working a 9-5 if that’s what u wanna do. this is motivation for the folks who wanna be a boss. watch “No Ordinary” Podcast on YouTube ,” he wrote.
Doubling down, Granberry took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to further explain.
