Tyla stunned 2024 MTV EMAs fans with her award show debut performance of her latest single ‘Push 2 Start’ on Sunday night (November 10), and she dropped jaws on the event’s red carpet in a magnificent vintage Robert Cavalli gown.
Social media sleuths quickly noticed that the design was a striking homage to the tiger-print dress worn by late R&B princess Aaliyah on the carpet of the 2000 MTV VMAs.
And while fans around the globe praised the fashion splash made by the ‘Water‘ hitmaker (born Tyla Laura Seethal), she got a particularly special shout-out from an unexpected source: Aaliyah’s brother Rashad Haughton.
Tyla may have been born five months after Aaliyah’s untimely death. Still, the South African starlet has never shied away from speaking on the late singer’s influence over her music – an admiration she reiterated while accepting the Best R&B Award at Sunday’s EMAs.
“R&B is a huge influence on my music. Especially Aaliyah, she’s like one of my idols,” Seethal said (as seen in the video above).
Once word got to Rashad’s desk, he congratulated the rising Amapiano songstress for her EMAs wins and recognition of his superstar sister.
“Love this…congrats Queen,” he shared via his Instagram stories on Sunday (November 10) before saying, “Shout to Queen Tyla for the love and respect.”
