Don’t let your failures weigh you down – Lookman Reflects on Early Career Struggles After Winning Africa’s Player of the Year

Ademola Lookman completed a dramatic career comeback on Monday night, being named the 2024 African Player of the Year.

The Nigerian and Atalanta forward defeated stiff competition from other renowned African stars, including Achraf Hakimi, at the CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco.

Lookman’s improvement is impressive, especially given the criticism he received in 2020 for missing a Panenka penalty for Fulham against West Ham in the Premier League.

Four years later, the Nigerian forward has become a symbol of resilience and excellence.

Reflecting on the sacrifices and determination that fueled his journey, Lookman said:

“Firstly, I want to thank Almighty God for everything that He’s been doing in my life and everything He has blessed me with.

“I want to thank the president, all my teammates, club, and country.

“I want to thank them for their support and the love that they give me.

“This award today is a blessing to me, to my family, and to my nation.

“To be recognized as the best player in Africa is something incredible, and I’m extremely proud of it.

“Just over four years ago, I fell in front of the world, and fast forward four years, I am the best player in Africa.

“I want to say to all the young children and people watching this: don’t let your failures weigh you down and break your wings.

“Instead, turn your pain into power and continue to fly,” he added.
