“They pressure you to pay a bribe” – Niger Republic Bars Nigerians with ECOWAS Passports, Enforces New Entry Restrictions

Niger Republic Bars Nigerians with ECOWAS Passports, Enforces New Entry Restrictions

In a major shift in immigration policy, the Republic of Niger has begun enforcing strict travel restrictions on Nigerians, barring entry for those using the ECOWAS passport without a valid international passport.

This development comes after Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso withdrew from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), signaling a shift in diplomatic and trade relations within the region.

New Travel Restrictions at the Niger Border

Despite keeping its border open with Nigeria, Nigerien authorities have implemented tougher immigration measures at key border crossings, including Illela (Nigeria) and Konni (Niger).

Cross-border traders and commuters are now facing serious challenges, as Niger refuses to recognize the ECOWAS passport as a valid means of entry.

Traders and Travelers Affected

Alhaji Mansur Abdullah, a frequent cross-border trader, confirmed the development, expressing concerns over the impact on businesses.

“Some of our people are being turned back. We learned that Niger has introduced a new passport, replacing the ECOWAS passport. This is already affecting our trading activities,” he said.

Another traveler, Abubakar Isa, a commercial driver on the Illela-Konni route, accused security officials of exploiting the situation by demanding bribes.

“They demand between 5,000 to 10,000 CFA before allowing those with ECOWAS passports to pass. If you don’t have Niger’s new identification document, they pressure you to pay a bribe,” he alleged.

Trade Continues, But Fear Grows

Despite the travel restrictions, trade between Nigeria and Niger remains active, with many traders continuing their businesses as usual. However, there are growing concerns that stricter border policies could soon disrupt movement and trade in the region.

ECOWAS Yet to Respond

Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Commission has stated that it is not aware of Niger’s decision to bar entry for travelers using ECOWAS passports.
