Nollywood veteran actress Kate Henshaw has strongly advised women to take self-defense classes to protect themselves against domestic violence and gender-based attacks.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday Beats, the fitness enthusiast and human rights advocate expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in cases of violence against women. She emphasized the need for women to equip themselves with self-defense skills to safeguard their lives.
“We all just have to be careful, and to the women who are mostly the victims, I would say we have to take self-defense classes if possible so we can protect ourselves,” Henshaw stated.
Advocating for Stronger Measures Against Gender-Based Violence
Beyond self-defense, the actress urged Nigerian states to adopt proactive measures in combating sexual and domestic violence. She commended the Lagos State Government for launching a digital platform allowing victims to report incidents anonymously, stressing that such initiatives should be replicated nationwide.
“I would want other states to take on the template that Lagos State has set with regards to sexual violence. They just launched an app where you can report incidences incognito through a digital platform, which is very good,” she said.
Henshaw further called on authorities to strengthen laws and policies that protect women and men alike from the rising tide of violence.
“I enjoin other states to follow that template and even do better to make sure that they protect women, and of course, the men too. I don’t understand what is happening in society these days. It just feels like it’s not ours any longer,” she added.
