Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally extended an apology to the public for the significant traffic disruptions resulting from the recently suspended repair operations on the Independence Bridge adjacent to Bonny Camp in Lagos.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, disseminated updates on the social media platform X, indicating that Sanwo-Olu conducted an on-site inspection at 9:59 a.m. in the company of prominent government officials to evaluate the prevailing circumstances.
Gawat cited the governor’s remarks regarding the repair initiative, executed by Messrs Buildwell Construction, which had been meticulously planned for a duration exceeding three years to avert a prospective structural compromise.
Nevertheless, in response to the inconveniences experienced, Sanwo-Olu reassured residents that prompt interventions would be implemented to facilitate the alleviation of traffic disruptions.
To address the congestion, he proclaimed that alternative routes would undergo enhanced management, complemented by an increased presence of traffic officers and security personnel, akin to the strategies employed during the holiday season.
Furthermore, he implored the citizens of Lagos to comply with traffic regulations and advocated for businesses with remote work capabilities to permit their employees to telecommute throughout the duration of the repair activities.
Concurrently, in a noteworthy alteration of policy, the Federal Government on Wednesday withdrew its previous resolution to impose a complete closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic.
This declaration was communicated by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, through a statement issued by Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Lagos Federal Controller of Works.
However, in light of the public outcry regarding the ensuing traffic gridlock, authorities have resolved to adopt an alternative strategy concerning the rehabilitation process.
