The Catholic Church has chosen a new Pope: Cardinal Robert Prevost, a U.S.-born cleric and experienced Vatican official, who will now be known as Pope Leo XIV.
The announcement came Wednesday from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, following the appearance of white smoke—a traditional signal that a new Pope has been elected.
At 69, Prevost makes history as the first Pope born in the United States, a milestone for American Catholics and the global Church alike.
He takes over from Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV is a member of the Order of St. Augustine and is known for his calm yet decisive leadership, strong theological background, and international pastoral experience.
In 2023, he was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, where he was responsible for the appointment and oversight of bishops worldwide.
