Smokey Robinson is facing increasing legal pressure as he has been accused of sexual assault by four former housekeepers, leading to an official criminal investigation into the Motown legend.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department confirmed the news in a brief statement, which read:
“The investigation is in the early stages, and we have no further comment.”
The four Jane Does, who allege sexual assault at the hands of Robinson dating back to 2007, said that they didn’t contact police at the time of the alleged incidents because they were afraid of losing their jobs and concerned about their immigration status.
The quartet’s attorneys, John Harris and Herbert Hayden, reacted to the latest development, saying:
“Our clients intend to fully cooperate with LASD’s ongoing investigation in the pursuit of seeking justice for themselves and others that may have been similarly assaulted by him.”
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Smokey Robinson’s attorney Christopher Frost shared:
“We are aware that a police report has now been filed by the Plaintiffs in the civil lawsuit. It is clear to us what is happening here. Plaintiffs filed a police report only after they filed a $50 million lawsuit. This means only that the police are now required to investigate. [We] welcome the investigation, as Robinson did nothing wrong.”
Smokey Robinson has gone on record to deny all of the allegations, which he branded “vile” via a rep.
