Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has stated that further defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) can be expected ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Saraki, who now chairs the PDP’s recently inaugurated Reconciliation Committee, made this remark while speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday.
He acknowledged that while some PDP members are likely to join the ruling APC, there is also a possibility that members from other political parties will cross over to the PDP.
“Some members of the party (PDP) might still defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC),” he said.
“I’m also confident that politicians from other political parties might also join the PDP.”
The PDP has been battling internal crises since the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, including leadership tussles and a long-standing rift between Atiku Abubakar and the G-5 governors led by Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the FCT. The latest struggle revolves around the dispute over the office of the party’s National Secretary.
Despite these challenges, Saraki remains optimistic about the PDP’s future. He emphasized that the party is still Nigeria’s most formidable and viable opposition and assured supporters that efforts to resolve internal disputes are yielding positive responses.
“The only viable opposition party is PDP, and yes, there are challenges, and I have taken it upon myself to do my best,” Saraki stated.
“I want to use this opportunity to reassure our members across the country that we are doing our best to rescue the party’s situation. We are confident that we will tackle the situation. We are committed to it.”
Saraki’s leadership of the reconciliation efforts comes at a critical time as the PDP tries to rebuild ahead of the next general election.
