Oprah Winfrey stole the spotlight at the 2025 Tony Awards with a sly remark many believe was aimed at the ongoing feud involving Broadway icons Patti LuPone, Kecia Lewis, and Audra McDonald.
While presenting the award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Oprah delivered a line that left the audience laughing — and speculating.
“Our celebration of this astounding year in live theater turns to the women whose work sparked lively conversations among theater fans,” she said, before pausing and adding with a knowing smile:
“Lotta talking going on!”
The comment quickly lit up social media, with many interpreting it as a subtle nod to the recent backstage drama that has rocked the Broadway community.
Audra McDonald, one of the actresses at the center of the controversy, was present as a nominee in the very category Oprah was presenting. The award ultimately went to Nicole Scherzinger for her role in Sunset Boulevard. Notably absent from the event was Patti LuPone, whose sharp remarks earlier this year sparked the industry uproar.
The feud stems from a fiery interview LuPone gave to The New Yorker, where she referred to Kecia Lewis as a “bitch” and dismissed Lewis’ views as uninformed. LuPone’s comments were in response to Lewis calling her complaints about loud music rehearsals “micro aggressive.” The backlash was immediate — over 500 Broadway professionals signed an open letter condemning LuPone’s statements, prompting the veteran actress to issue a formal apology.
Though Oprah avoided naming anyone directly, her pointed quip added fuel to the public spectacle, blending real-life drama with one of Broadway’s most glamorous nights.
