Dortmund Extend Carney Chukwuemeka’s Loan Deal Amid Club World Cup Campaign

Borussia Dortmund has reached a general agreement with Chelsea to extend Carney Chukwuemeka’s loan until the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup, according to the club’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl.

Speaking to reporters in Florida, where the tournament is taking place, Kehl confirmed the positive update:

“There is positive news about Carney. I conducted discussions with Chelsea. In the end, we have a general agreement that Carney will stay with us as long as this tournament is for Borussia Dortmund,” he said.

“There are still some formalities to be dealt with, but we are very confident that we will continue to see Carney back in a black and yellow jersey at this tournament.”

Why the Extension Matters

Chukwuemeka’s initial loan was scheduled to expire on June 30, but with Dortmund progressing deeper into the Club World Cup, an extension became essential for squad depth and continuity.

The 20-year-old midfielder has impressed during the tournament, adding dynamism to Dortmund’s midfield. His performances have drawn praise, particularly as the club pursues Club World Cup glory.

Possible Link to Jamie Gittens Deal

The timing of the extension has raised eyebrows amid news that Jamie Gittens is set to join Chelsea for €65 million. While neither club has officially linked the deals, speculation is mounting that Chukwuemeka’s short-term stay may have been part of broader negotiations tied to Gittens’ transfer.

Long-Term Future?

Dortmund had previously considered a permanent deal for Chukwuemeka, but financial limitations made it difficult. Still, the English U21 international’s loan extension hints at a strong relationship between the two clubs and leaves the door open for further talks.

As Dortmund aim to go all the way in the Club World Cup, Chukwuemeka’s continued presence could prove pivotal on and off the pitch.
