Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, also known as Mr P, has stirred fresh conversations about the infamous breakup of music duo P-Square, claiming he is the only certified musician in the Okoye family.
Speaking at the recent AY Live event, Peter Okoye addressed long-standing criticisms that branded him “talentless,” alleging that such comments played a major role in the rift between him and his twin brother and former bandmate, Paul Okoye (Rudeboy).
According to him, fans who constantly compared the brothers and touted Paul as the more talented one planted seeds of discord, which eventually “got into his [Paul’s] head” and led to the group’s eventual split.
“I have sang and danced but they told you I am talentless,” Peter told the crowd. “I will prove myself today. The reason P-Square split was because two brothers were doing their thing and some fans started saying one was more talented than the other, and it got into his head and he started misbehaving.”
Peter further revealed that he is the only one in his family with a formal music education, claiming,
“In the whole of Okoye’s family, I’m the only one with music certificate. I read music. But they lied to you.”
To reinforce his point, Peter Okoye showcased his range by singing, dancing, and playing both the piano and guitar live on stage, declaring:
“I have sang, danced and played the piano and the guitar — is it easy?”
The P-Square duo, once one of Africa’s most iconic music groups, officially disbanded in 2017, but reunited in 2021, thrilling fans with joint performances and nostalgic hits. However, Peter Okoye’s latest comments hint at lingering tensions and a desire to reclaim his individual narrative after years of public speculation.
Fans have since taken to social media, with some praising Mr P’s boldness while others urged the brothers to maintain unity and focus on the music that once united millions.
