Zayn Malik is preparing to release a powerful new song that shines a light on the racism he endured during his time as a member of One Direction.
The 32-year-old singer recently previewed a clip of a track titled Fuchsia Sea on Instagram, featuring the striking lyric:
“I worked hard in a white band / And they still laughed at the Asian.”
The emotionally charged line has quickly grabbed attention, hinting at the challenges Zayn faced as the only non-white member of the globally successful boy band formed in 2010 alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and the late Liam Payne.
While a song with the same title appeared on Zayn’s 2024 solo album Room Under The Stairs, it’s unclear whether this is a reimagined version or an entirely new release. Either way, the post was captioned simply, “Zaddy’s home,” with the track teased as “coming soon.”
Zayn, who is of Pakistani heritage through his father, has long been vocal about the discrimination he’s experienced. In 2012, he told The Sun:
“Nasty things [were said] like I’m a terrorist, and this and that.
How can you justify that? How can you call me that and get away with it?”
One of the most notable controversies occurred when American TV host Bill Maher compared Zayn to Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev — an incident that sparked public outrage and calls for an apology.
Despite the painful memories, Zayn still holds emotional ties to his time in the band. During a concert in Mexico City in March, he performed Night Changes—his final single with One Direction—on the anniversary of his departure.
“It’s the first time I sang that song in 10 years,” he told the crowd.
“Thank you, that was f****** amazing. I almost cried at one point. This is insane.”
Zayn Malik announced his departure from One Direction in 2015, stating:
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined.
But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band.
I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart.
I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight.”
The former bandmates recently reunited under tragic circumstances, coming together for Liam Payne’s funeral in late 2024. Payne, aged 31, tragically passed away after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
With Fuchsia Sea, Zayn Malik appears ready to turn pain into purpose, using his voice to confront the racism he faced and offer a deeper look into the emotional cost of fame.
