Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has opened up about a past conflict with fellow superstar Wizkid, revealing that the Essence hitmaker recently expressed regret over his actions during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
In an interview, Reekado reflected on the drama that unfolded in October 2020, when he announced the release of their joint single Omo Olomo amid nationwide protests against police brutality.
At the time, Wizkid—who had postponed the release of his Made in Lagos album out of respect for the protests—did not take the timing lightly. In now-deleted tweets, he publicly slammed Reekado, calling him a “fool” and a “clout animal,” sparking one of the most talked-about fallouts in the music scene that year.
“I Told My Team Not to Drop It” – Reekado Banks
Speaking candidly, Reekado revealed that he had advised his management not to release the song, recognizing that the timing was inappropriate given the sensitive national mood.
“It was not the nicest. I urged my management at the time not to put it out… It was so bad at the time. I was able to move on from it,” he shared.
He admitted feeling disrespected by Wizkid’s harsh words but said he chose to move on for the sake of peace and personal growth.
Wizkid Visits Reekado’s Restaurant, Apologises
According to Reekado, the two stars have since buried the hatchet, thanks to a heartfelt conversation sparked by a surprise visit from Wizkid to his restaurant.
“Recently, he came visiting my restaurant. We had a little talk and he was a little regretful about it. He was like he shouldn’t have gone that route.”
Loss and Reflection: “We Are Good Now”
Reekado also disclosed that Wizkid opened up about his recent struggles and took responsibility for other public outbursts, including his tension with music mogul Don Jazzy.
“He mentioned his behaviour towards Don Jazzy as well, and he was like we are three people in the game that have only recently lost our moms. He feels sorry about the time, so we are good now.”
Notably, all three artistes—Wizkid, Reekado Banks, and Don Jazzy—have lost their mothers in the last few years, a shared grief that, according to Reekado, has softened old tensions.
-
Wizkid lost his mother, Juliana Morayo Balogun, in August 2023.
-
Reekado’s mother passed away in 2022.
-
Don Jazzy’s mother died in July 2022.
“Now I Stand By My Convictions”
Reflecting on the experience, Reekado said it taught him the importance of standing by his values and decisions.
“So there is not much that I am convinced to do these days that I do not do.”
The controversial song, Omo Olomo, was eventually released on October 15, 2020, but the fallout from its announcement has left a lasting lesson for the singer.
