Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Monday, following his passing in London on Sunday at 4:30 p.m., where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness.
The news of Buhari’s death was confirmed by his former media aide, Garba Shehu, in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
According to TVC News, preparations are underway in Daura for the late president’s burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
In a swift response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his predecessor and has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to London. Shettima has been directed to escort Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria ahead of the burial.
Buhari, Nigeria’s 15th president and a retired military general, served two terms between 2015 and 2023, and remained a prominent figure in national and regional politics even after leaving office.
As the nation prepares for his final rites, tributes continue to pour in from across political, religious, and international communities.
