Nigerian Afropop star Adekunle Gold, popularly known as AG Baby, has voiced his displeasure over the unauthorized use of his viral ‘first-class giveaway’ initiative by a well-known Nigerian bank in their promotional campaign.
The artist had earlier launched the initiative to celebrate Nigerians with first-class degrees, awarding them cash prizes as a way to recognize their academic excellence.
However, Wema Bank and its digital banking platform, ALAT, appeared to capitalize on the trend in a recent advert without seeking his permission. The bank’s message read:
“AG Baby no send you first class gift? No worries, ALAT’s got you covered. Enjoy up to 70% off your favorite brands this weekend via eVouchers on the ALAT app – it’s no crime to not have a first-class degree.”
Reacting to the use of his concept, Adekunle Gold took to social media to call out the bank, expressing shock and signaling possible legal action. He wrote:
“Dear @wemabank @alat_ng, when did this start? You’ll be hearing from my people.”
The incident has sparked debate online about intellectual property rights, brand ethics, and the growing trend of corporates using celebrity-driven initiatives without proper clearance.
