Popular South African radio presenter and DJ, Sol Phenduka, has been suspended from Kaya 959 with immediate effect. The station confirmed the development on Wednesday, 20 August, stating that Sol, whose real name is Solomzi Phenduka, will not be on air from Thursday, 21 August.
In an official statement, Kaya 959 explained that the decision was necessary while an internal process takes place. However, the station did not disclose the specific reason behind the suspension.
“Kaya 959 confirms that presenter Sol Phenduka has been placed on suspension with immediate effect, pending the outcome of an internal process. We want to assure all staff that the matter is being handled with fairness, sensitivity and due process. At this stage, no further details can be shared, but we will keep you informed as soon as there are developments. Our focus remains on maintaining stability across the station and continuing to deliver the highest quality of programming for our listeners,” the statement read.
Sol Phenduka is best known as co-host of Kaya 959’s popular breakfast show alongside Sizwe Dhlomo, Nosipho Radebe, and Mpho Maboi. Before this line-up, he shared the mic with Dineo Ranaka, who also exited the station under controversial circumstances after being dismissed.
Since joining Kaya 959 in 2022, Sol has gained a strong following among listeners for his humor, bold opinions, and distinctive radio personality. His sudden suspension has left fans shocked, particularly because no details about the reasons have been made public.
For now, Kaya 959 listeners will have to tune in to the breakfast show without Sol until the station concludes its internal process and makes a final decision regarding his future at the station.
