Made Kuti Responds to Criticism Over Marriage to Inedoye Onyenso

Made Kuti Questions Excessive Car Ownership

Afrobeat singer Made Kuti, grandson of the legendary Fela Kuti, has addressed criticisms surrounding his marriage to Inedoye Onyenso, calling out what he described as “slave mentality.”

The musician tied the knot with Onyenso at a civil wedding ceremony in Lagos in November 2023. However, the union has been met with backlash from some quarters, with critics attacking the couple for marrying across ethnic lines.

Responding to a recent post by an X user, @AdemolaOgudu, who branded him a “foolish Yoruba man” for marrying an Igbo woman, Made Kuti rejected the divisive rhetoric.

“Believing ethnic superiority/inferiority is justifiable is slave mentality,” he wrote.

Kuti went further to urge critics to seek enlightenment from the teachings and legacies of Pan-African leaders, including his great-grandmother Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, his grandfather Fela Kuti, as well as Kwame Nkrumah and Thomas Sankara.

According to him, Africa’s progress lies in unity rather than division.

“We gain more as Africans when united,” he emphasized.

Kuti’s remarks add to ongoing conversations about inter-ethnic marriages in Nigeria, where cultural diversity often collides with entrenched prejudices.
