Rema Accused of Using Police to Harass Interior Designer Over Payment Dispute

Popular Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, has come under fire on social media following allegations that he has repeatedly used the police to harass and detain Lagos-based interior designer Amaka Obasi over an unresolved payment dispute.

The claims surfaced on Monday via X user @software_artist, who alleged that Obasi, known online as @amaka_babyy, was lured into attending a meeting at the Force CID in Alagbon, Lagos, where she was arrested and forced to pay more than one million naira as bail.

According to the posts, Obasi had previously worked on renovation projects for Rema’s mother’s home in Benin and the singer’s personal residence. She was later commissioned to handle additional projects, including the construction of a music studio and a water system upgrade. However, instead of settling the bills, it was alleged that Rema filed police complaints and used his influence to intimidate her.

The thread further claimed that Obasi had been arrested three times in connection with the matter and was currently being held in detention. It also alleged that the police pressured her to remain unreachable by phone so the public would assume she was still in custody.

The user wrote in part:

“Rema (@heisrema) is using the Nigeria Police Force to harass and detain Amaka Obasi (@amaka_babyy) all because she asked for payment on the project he commissioned her to do.

He tricked her into a meeting with his lawyers, only to summon officers from the State CID Alagbon to arrest her. She has now been detained three times, with his mother allegedly filing a petition to discredit the work she completed in 2023.”

So far, neither Rema nor the Nigerian Police Force has issued an official response to the allegations, which have sparked widespread outrage online.
