Akon is taking a firm position in his ongoing divorce from his estranged wife, Tomeka, as new court documents show he has no intention of paying her any spousal support.
According to the filings, the music star selected the option to terminate spousal support for Tomeka, his wife of twenty-nine years. The development follows Tomeka’s own initial divorce petition filed in September, in which she requested support while also asking the court not to award any support to Akon — a move that signals both parties may be working to safeguard their individual finances.
In his response submitted on Friday at the Los Angeles Superior Court, Akon also sought joint physical custody of their seventeen-year-old child. Tomeka, on the other hand, is requesting joint legal custody but full physical custody for herself.
The divorce proceedings come at a time when the singer is already dealing with legal troubles elsewhere. Just last week, he was arrested in Georgia for failing to appear in court in connection with a charge of driving with a suspended license.
As the case continues to unfold, both Akon and Tomeka are navigating issues surrounding custody, finances, and the dissolution of their nearly three-decade marriage.
