Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — the coalition-backed party he is expected to align with as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Atiku made the announcement on Monday via his official X account, where he shared a photo of himself holding his ADC membership card alongside a brief caption: “It’s official.”
His formal defection comes months after his July resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party long plagued by internal divisions and leadership disputes.
The move cements Atiku’s alignment with the ADC, which he publicly endorsed earlier in July as a unifying platform for key opposition figures — including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal — to jointly challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
CREEBHILLS reports that until now, Atiku and several opposition leaders had delayed obtaining formal membership in the ADC despite continued consultations.
The ADC was unveiled earlier this year as an opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 polls, with former Senate President David Mark named National Chairman, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola appointed National Secretary, and ex-Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi serving as National Publicity Secretary.
