My Father Called Comedy a “Stupid Business” — Sabinus Opens Up on Early Struggles

Sabinus makes a solemn pledge to Nigerians, says “I must live long”

Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has shared how his father strongly opposed his journey into comedy before eventually accepting his career path.

Speaking in an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus revealed that his father had envisioned a legal career for him and was disappointed when he failed to secure admission to study law. As a result, he opted for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.

He recalled that it was during his time on campus that he discovered his comedic talent and began creating skits—even though the financial returns were nonexistent at the time.

According to him, his father was unaware of his involvement in comedy throughout his university years. That changed after graduation when the older Ejekwu began seeing his son featured on comedy posters.

Sabinus recounted his father’s reaction:
“He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”

The comedian noted that his father even regretted sponsoring his education once he learned he had become a skit maker.

However, the tone eventually shifted. Sabinus explained that once he began earning from comedy and started gifting his father money, the disapproval faded and was replaced with full support.
