Barcelona women’s midfield maestro Aitana Bonmati has been sidelined for five months after undergoing surgery to repair a leg fracture, the club announced on Tuesday.
The three-time Ballon d’Or winner sustained the injury on Sunday while training with the Spanish national team. Barcelona confirmed the setback in an official statement, noting that her expected recovery period will “be around five months.”
Bonmati’s absence is a major blow for both club and country. Spain face Germany later today in the second leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final, where they are targeting back-to-back titles after lifting the trophy in 2024.
For Barcelona, the loss of their influential midfielder comes at a crucial stage of the season. The Spanish champions currently sit six points clear of Real Sociedad in the league and remain joint-top of the Champions League league-phase standings alongside French powerhouse Lyon.
Should her rehabilitation go as planned, Bonmati could make a timely return in time for a potential Champions League final appearance in Oslo on May 23, 2026.
Barcelona have reached five consecutive Champions League finals, winning three but falling short against Arsenal in the most recent edition. Bonmati’s injury, however, leaves a significant void that both Barca and Spain will have to navigate in the months ahead.
