Ed Sheeran dismisses marriage fears over honest lyrics

Ed Sheeran has clarified that the emotionally heavy themes on the deluxe edition of his latest album Play—including tracks like Regrets, War Games and Problems—reflect heightened artistic expression, not the state of his marriage to wife Cherry Seaborn.

The songs had sparked concern among fans about possible strain in the relationship and the challenges of being away from Cherry and their two daughters while on tour.

However, speaking at a Spotify pop-up event over the weekend, Sheeran explained that his songwriting is driven by emotional extremes, not everyday reality.

“Sometimes people listen to records today and assume that what that song is, is their world 100 per cent at the time,” he said, as reported by The Sun’s Bizarre column.
“It’s very much like heightened emotions. You never write a song on a ‘meh’ day.
You always write songs like, ‘This is the happiest I’ve ever felt… this is the angriest I’ve ever felt.’ They’re all big extremities—and that’s what inspires the song.”

Ed Sheeran added that Cherry understands his creative process and isn’t unsettled by darker tracks because he has also written many songs celebrating their relationship, including Heaven and Perfect.
“It’s good to be honest,” the 34-year-old said. “She knows I am writing songs like Don’t Look Down and Wargames.”

The father of two—who shares daughters Lyra, 5, and Jupiter, 3, with Cherry—also revealed he’s considering a major change to avoid long stretches away from home. He may build his own performance venue in his hometown and host a long-term residency instead of touring extensively.

“I’ve got one more big tour in me before settling down for school years,” he said on the Awards Chatter podcast. “If I can get to a point where I’m playing shows, writing songs and hanging out with my family, then you can cut the noise out.”

Ed Sheeran recently wrapped his massive Mathematics Tour, which spanned 188 shows across five continents. He is currently on The Loop Tour, which began on December 1, 2025, in Paris and will run through November 7, 2026, in Tampa, Florida.
