Google Introduces Feature Allowing Users Change Gmail Address Without Losing Data

Google has unveiled a long-awaited feature that allows Gmail users to change their existing @gmail.com email addresses while keeping all their data and services intact.

According to an update spotted on Google’s account help page, users can now replace an old Gmail address with a new one without creating a fresh account. All emails, photos, messages and linked services such as Google Drive, Maps and YouTube will remain unaffected.

The update currently appears on Google’s Hindi-language support page, suggesting the rollout may be starting in India or Hindi-speaking regions, with a gradual expansion to other markets. The English version of the page still states that Gmail addresses “usually cannot be changed.”

Under the new policy, the original email address will remain active as an alias, meaning emails sent to the old address will still arrive in the inbox, and users can continue signing in with it.

Previously, users had to open a new account and manually transfer data—a process often described as stressful and disruptive, especially for third-party app integrations.

Google noted that users who change their Gmail address cannot create another new address for 12 months and will not be able to delete the new email address once chosen.
