Human rights activist and BringBackOurGirls co-convener, Aisha Yesufu, has decried what she described as the growing danger faced by medical doctors in Nigeria, lamenting that the country has become the most unsafe place for doctors to live and practise.
Yesufu made the statement on Thursday via her official X (formerly Twitter) handle while reacting to the recent abduction of a medical doctor and his brother in Edo State earlier this month.
The doctor’s brother was reportedly killed by the abductors, while the doctor was later released after a ransom of ₦50 million was allegedly paid.
Expressing outrage, Yesufu criticised the perceived silence of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), describing it as a betrayal of its members.
“The silence of the NMA is a deafening betrayal! If a study was to be done, it would not be surprising to hear that Nigeria is the most dangerous place for doctors to live,” she wrote.
She further noted that there has been a consistent pattern of doctors being targeted by terrorists and kidnappers over the years, adding that the country has failed to prioritise the safety of healthcare professionals.
“We have as a nation not been bothered about the plight of those we need at our most vulnerable,” Yesufu added.
