A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has convicted Kannywood actress Saadatu Mohammed Inuwa, popularly known as Samha Inuwa, for deliberately mutilating the Nigerian currency.
Justice S.M. Shuaibu delivered the judgment after the actress pleaded guilty to soiling a ₦1,000 note by wiping it with her nose — an act the court held to be in breach of currency protection regulations governing the naira.
Sentence and Fine Option
The court sentenced Inuwa to six months’ imprisonment. However, she was given the option to pay a ₦200,000 fine in lieu of serving the custodial term.
During proceedings, the actress — identified as a first-time offender — expressed remorse and appealed for leniency before sentencing.
Enforcement of Naira Protection Laws
The conviction reinforces Nigeria’s strict enforcement of laws prohibiting the abuse, mutilation, defacing, spraying, or improper handling of the national currency.
Under existing statutes, actions such as writing on, tearing, stapling, spraying at events, or otherwise defacing the naira can attract fines, imprisonment, or both. The law is aimed at preserving the currency’s integrity and lifespan.
Broader Implications
Recent prosecutions across the country signal a sustained effort by authorities to clamp down on practices considered disrespectful or damaging to the national legal tender.
The ruling underscores the judiciary’s stance that even seemingly minor acts involving currency mishandling can carry criminal consequences.
