Hip-hop legend Jay-Z is making headlines once again—this time for a subtle but symbolic change to his name.
Ahead of his highly anticipated reunion performance with The Roots at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on May 30, the rapper has added an umlaut to his moniker, now appearing as JAŸ-Z on official billing.
The update isn’t limited to event posters. The 56-year-old, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has also adjusted his stage name across major streaming platforms, including YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal, to reflect the new stylization.
Interestingly, the change appears to be a nod to his early career. Artwork from his debut album Reasonable Doubt and its breakout singles featured similar stylistic elements, including the use of umlauts, suggesting a return to his roots.
This isn’t the first time Jay-Z has experimented with his name.
In 2013, he notably dropped the hyphen, explaining in an interview on Big Boy’s Neighborhood that the punctuation had become outdated.
“The hyphen was really big back in the day. It’s not useful anymore… You change with the times,” he said at the time, also noting that he had previously removed umlauts from his name.
However, the hyphen made a comeback in 2017 with the release of his album 4:44, when his branding shifted back to JAY-Z in all caps.
Now, with the introduction of the umlaut, the evolution continues—blending nostalgia with reinvention as the rap icon gears up for another major live moment.
