The Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building in Dubai, was struck by multiple dramatic lightning bolts during intense thunderstorms on March 27, 2026.
Striking images shared online by the Dubai Media Office and other sources captured the moment lightning hit the 829m/2,722ft structure, drawing global attention to the extreme weather conditions in the city.
Authorities moved swiftly in response to the situation, issuing warnings after heavy rainfall and severe weather swept through parts of the country.
Across the United Arab Emirates, emergency measures were activated as officials worked to manage the impact of the storm. Reports indicated that safety alerts were issued nationwide as conditions worsened.
“Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds” swept across large parts of the UAE from Thursday into early Friday.
According to reports, an unstable weather system caused “lightning, booming thunder and intense downpours in several cities”, as well as “dust-raising winds and reduced visibility”.
In Dubai, law enforcement intensified its response to ensure public safety. The city’s police force stated on X that operations had been scaled up, with specialised teams deployed to secure roads and maintain order. Their goal was to “keep traffic moving smoothly” despite the challenging conditions.
