Donald Trump has sharply criticised the United Kingdom for refusing to support potential military action against Iran, urging Britain to “get your own oil” as fuel shortages worsen due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The remarks follow a statement by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who reaffirmed that Britain would not participate in any ground invasion of Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom… I have a suggestion for you.
“Number 1, buy from the U.S. we have plenty. Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us.” He added: “Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done.”
The comments represent a further escalation in tensions between Washington and London, with Trump also reportedly criticising Starmer’s leadership and comparing him unfavourably to Winston Churchill.
Britain is currently under pressure over its energy supply, as disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have pushed up fuel prices and raised fears of shortages. Reports indicate that the country’s last major jet fuel shipment from the Middle East is expected within days.
In response, Starmer is set to chair an emergency COBRA meeting to assess the economic implications, including contingency plans for diesel, jet fuel, and fertiliser supplies, as well as the broader cost-of-living impact.
Despite the heightened rhetoric, diplomatic relations between both countries remain intact, with plans for a UK state visit to the United States still expected to proceed.
Trump also extended his criticism to other allies, including France, over restrictions on military logistics, while reports suggest the U.S. is exploring options to end the conflict without reopening the Strait of Hormuz, focusing instead on a mix of military pressure and diplomatic efforts.
