US Embassy Cancels Abuja Visa Appointments Amid Security Concerns

US Embassy Announces New Directive for Nigerian Visa Applicants

The United States Embassy in Abuja has announced the cancellation of all visa appointments in Abuja, advising affected applicants to monitor their emails for rescheduled dates.

In a notice issued on Thursday, the Embassy explained that while visa services in Abuja are temporarily halted, operations will continue at the U.S. Consulate General Lagos.

The mission also clarified that American citizen services in Abuja remain available, but strictly on an appointment basis or in emergency situations.

The development follows a directive from the United States Department of State authorising the departure of non-essential government personnel and their families from Abuja, citing worsening security conditions.

In its updated travel advisory, the Department of State urged U.S. citizens to reconsider travel to Nigeria, pointing to heightened risks including crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and inconsistent access to healthcare.

The move underscores growing international concern over Nigeria’s security situation and may impact visa processing timelines for applicants in Abuja in the coming weeks.
